A 14-year-old boy who was hit by a car that killed his sister was upgraded to serious condition, a hospital official said Thursday.

Hassan Muhammad Ibrahim is improving at Methodist Hospital, spokesman Jon Mills said.

Hassan's sister, Shukri Muhammad Ibrahim, 9, died after she was hit by a car Tuesday evening while riding her pink bicycle in the 4700 block of Central Avenue.

The driver, Margaret Graves, 42, had two children in her car. She told police she fell asleep while driving south on Central, police said. Her car crossed the center line and the main travel lane, striking the children.

Police did not arrest Graves, and the Marion County prosecutor's office has declined to comment about whether charges would be pursued.

Hassan's family came to Indianapolis on March 21. They had been living in a refugee camp in Kenya since 1993 after fleeing Somalia, a country ravaged by civil war.
