MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Battles raged in Mogadishu between government allies and insurgents for a second day, as a mortar shell struck a residential area in south Mogadishu on Friday morning, residents said.

"A mortar has just fallen into the house next to me. We can hear crying and can see smoke," Faisal Jamah, a resident of south Mogadishu told Reuters by telephone. "We barely slept last night, the sky was lit up by shelling all night."

Dozens of people were killed on Thursday when Ethiopian troops supporting the government used tanks and helicopters to launch a major offensive against insurgents in the capital in the worst day of fighting since a war over the New Year.

Breaking a rocky cease-fire in place since the weekend, the Ethiopians launched the aerial attacks against Islamists ousted from the capital at the start of the year and disgruntled militia who used to run the lawless city.

"There are a lot of wounded but there is no way to take them to the hospitals due to the fighting on the roads," Jamah said.
