What does good governance and effective administration look like?

For a long time, the Somali people have experienced administrations that failed to fulfil the responsibilities entrusted to them.

Today, however, I met a Director General who left a strong impression on me not because of his title or position but because of his character, calmness and genuine ability to listen to people.

These are qualities that are often missing among senior leaders.

During our conversation, I experienced leadership grounded in understanding and mutual respect rather than leadership driven by fear or authoritarian command.

He stood apart from many leaders who operate with arrogance, insecurity or make decisions without consultation.

The key lesson I took from this encounter was this: “People may not always share the same views or opinions, but the responsibility they hold together must be greater than their differences” The Director General demonstrated that holding a high office does not diminish one’s humanity.

What I observed included:

  • Transparency in how he engaged with staff
  • Respect for those working under his leadership
  • Patience in understanding diverse perspectives
  • Strategic insight in promoting collaboration

It is rare to encounter a leader who does not boast about their position but instead takes pride in respecting people and the national duty they collectively serve.

Professional leadership does not come from the top down; it begins with character, understanding and acceptance.

The Director General I met today exemplified leadership built on:

  • Dialogue
  • Humility
  • Mutual respect
  • Guidance free from fear

This experience was not merely a work meeting; it was a leadership lesson that left a lasting impression on me. It reaffirmed that a person in a senior position can still remain close to the people, worthy of respect and grounded in humility.

If Somali leaders were to adopt this approach, it would help create work environments rooted in trust, cooperation and genuine good governance.

  • Leadership is service, not command.
  • Leadership is character, not title.
  • Leadership is influence, not a symbol.
