Algerian Coast Guard officers provide emergency aid to Somali migrants rescued from a drifting vessel in the Mediterranean.

Mogadishu (HOL) — Algeria’s Coast Guard rescued at least 16 Somali migrants on Wednesday after their boat was found drifting 40 nautical miles north of El-Aouana, a coastal town in Jijel province.

The operation, led by Algeria’s Naval Command, responded to distress reports alerting authorities to a vessel struggling in the Mediterranean. Among those rescued were two women in critical condition, suffering from severe fatigue and exposure. They were rushed to the port of Djen Djen, where medical teams provided emergency treatment before transferring them to a hospital for further care.

“The mission reflects our continuous commitment to preserving human life and ensuring the safety of those at sea,” Algeria’s Ministry of Defense said.

The migrants had embarked on the perilous journey as part of a growing wave of irregular migration from the Horn of Africa, where economic hardship and insecurity have fueled desperate attempts to reach Europe. Algeria, situated along a key transit route, has intensified maritime patrols to intercept migrants heading for European shores.

Authorities confirmed that the rescued individuals would undergo health evaluations and be processed by immigration officials. Coordination with Somali diplomatic representatives is expected to determine their next steps, including possible repatriation.

According to the International Organization for Migration, hundreds of migrants lose their lives each year attempting the dangerous crossing.
