Somali President opens National Consultative Council meeting in Mogadishu

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud chaired the National Consultative Council meeting in Mogadishu on Tuesday. 

Federal and Federal Member state leaders will discuss various issues, including the country's political situation, security, and federal and regional elections.

According to a brief statement from the Somali Presidency,
 "The heads of the federal and state governments are discussing the security situation in the country, especially the fight against al-Shabab.”

The NCC summit was initially planned for April but was postponed due to "technical reasonslinked to escalating tensions among federal and regional leaders.

Prime Minister, Hamse Abdi Barre, along with regional state leaders including Jubbaland's Ahmed Mohamed Islam, South West's Abdizais Hassan Mohamed Laftagaren, Galmudug's Ahmed Abdi Kariye, and Hirshabelle's Ali Gudlawe Hussein are attending the meeting.

Puntland State leader Said Deni boycotted the summit following recent constitutional amendments that enhanced the President's powers and aimed to establish direct universal suffrage in the upcoming national elections.
