Somalia confident in securing UN Security Council seat with no African competitors

Wednesday June 5, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) — Somalia aims to secure a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council without facing any competition, diplomatic sources reported.

The election for the non-permanent seat will take place during the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly on June 6. Somalia is confident it has strong support from the African Union, which has reportedly endorsed it as the sole candidate for the African seat.

If successful, this will be Somalia's second time holding a non-permanent seat on the Security Council, the first being from 1971 to 1972. Unconfirmed reports indicate no other African country is contesting Somalia's bid.

Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi and his delegation are currently in New York, participating in the United Nations General Assembly session to elect new members of the Security Council.
