East African Legislative Assembly Speaker addresses Somali Upper House Parliament

Mogadishu (HOL) - The Speaker of the East African Legislative Assembly, Hon. Joseph Ntakirutimana, and members of his delegation attended a special meeting of the Somali Upper House of the Parliament in Mogadishu on Tuesday.

During the meeting, the Second Deputy Speaker of the Upper House, Abdullahi Tima Ade, emphasized that the Somali Parliament would establish a fruitful working relationship with the East African Legislative Assembly.

Speaker Tima Ade also announced that the Somali Parliament would expedite the appointment of its members to the East African Community Parliament.

In recognition of their visit, Hon. Joseph Ntakirutimana and the delegation members were presented with a medal of honor and gifts that reflect the traditions and culture of the Somali community.

In his speech, Hon. Joseph Ntakirutimana explained the purpose of his trip, the structure of the East African Community Parliament, and its responsibilities. He highlighted that during his visit to Somalia, he sought to meet with the East African Community Parliament members, consisting of nine members from the two houses of the 11th Somali Parliament.

After over a decade of intense lobbying, the Federal Republic of Somalia joined the East African Community (EAC) as the bloc’s 8th Partner State this year. Somalia began the process of joining the regional bloc in 2011.
