Speaker of House of Representatives accused of acting against Somaliland's existence

Friday March 17, 2023

Hargeisa (HOL) - The Vice President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Abdillahi Saylici, has accused the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abdirisaaq Khalif Ahmed, of leaving Somaliland after he allegedly supported the elders' decisions in the disputed Las Anod town.

In an interview with the media, Saylici accused Ahmed of committing an act against the existence of Somaliland.

"I believe he has crossed the Somaliland border; the accusation is that we are correcting or criticizing each other within our fence, where he was elected chairman of the House of Representatives," Saylici said.

He further claimed that Ahmed supported an unelected 33-member committee and went under Somalia's blue flag, saying that he was supposed to correct things rather than follow them. Saylici also accused Ahmed of making baseless reports that Somaliland's army removed people from their homes in the Sool region.

Ahmed had recently spoken to the media in Las Anod, supporting the traditional elders' decisions and accusing the army of bombing the city.

Since the outbreak of violence in Las Anod town, high-profile Somaliland politicians from the Sool region have condemned the government's decision to attack the town, and political party leaders have stepped down from Somaliland politics as a result of the conflict.
