Somalia's Wadajir party suffers blow as 19 members resign over leader's criticism of govt

Monday March 6, 2023

Mogadishu (HOL) - Nineteen members of the Wadajir political party, led by lawmaker Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, resigned from the party on Sunday night.

The statement announcing their resignation did not provide a reason for their departure. Among those who have resigned are lawmakers Abdifatah Sanyare, Kamal Gutale, Abdihakim Ainte, and Abdiweli Garyare.

Reports suggest that the resignations were prompted by the leader's criticism of recent government activities. Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, who also serves as Somalia's Special Presidential Envoy for Drought Climate and a member of parliament, spoke out against a motion signed by 100 lawmakers advocating amendments and supplements to the constitution.

He stated that parliament should prioritize submitting agendas to move the country out of indirect elections.

Former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed's Himilo Qaran party also opposes the proposed extension of government agencies, including the Presidency and Parliament.

The motion seeks to amend articles 60 and 91, which currently state that the President of the Federal Government of Somalia shall hold office for a term of four years, beginning on the day they take the oath of office.

The proposed motion to amend the constitution has sparked opposition from multiple parties, including Wadajir and Himilo Qaran.
