Somali military court sentences former al-Shabaab defector to 15 years in prison for rejoining group

    Mogadishu (HOL) - A Somali military court sentenced Ayub Osman Sheikh Aden Isaac to 15 years in prison on Sunday after he was found guilty of being an al-Shabaab member.

    Ayub Osman Sheikh was one of the young men who emerged from the rehabilitation camp for al-Shabaab defectors who had surrendered to the government. However, the Somali government claims that he has returned to the al-Shabaab ideology and has become a member again.

    However, the security agencies arrested him after he threw a hand grenade at a patrol force in the Janaale district of the Lower Shabelle region. The government also stated that he was being paid $30 to work for al-Shabaab.

    The verdict comes at a time when the Somali government is reviewing the rehabilitation center for al-Shabaab surrenderers.

    One month ago, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which provides financial support to the al-Shabaab training center, announced that it does not have any funds for the center in 2023.
