Participation in the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty as of October 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - The Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), Dr. Robert Floyd, is expected to arrive in Somalia on  February 15 for a one-day meeting with government officials.

The Executive Secretary will meet with Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of Somalia; Hamza Abdi Barre, Prime Minster; Abshir Omar Huruse, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; and Adan Muhammad Nur, Speaker of the Parliament.

Dr. Robert Floyd will discuss the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and the benefits of CTBTO membership, such as access to CTBTO data for civil and scientific applications, capacity building and technical assistance, and knowledge-sharing opportunities.

The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) bans all nuclear explosions “everywhere, by everyone, and for all time.”

The CTBTO has established an International Monitoring System (IMS) to ensure no nuclear explosion goes undetected. Currently, 303 certified facilities – of a total of 337 when complete – are operating worldwide, using four leading technologies: seismic, hydroacoustic, infrasound and radionuclide.

The data registered by the IMS can also be used for disaster mitigation, such as earthquake monitoring and tsunami warning, as well as research into fields as diverse as whale migration, climate change and the prediction of monsoon rains.

Dr. Floyd is the first CTBTO Executive Secretary to visit the country.
