British Embassy Mogadishu hosts a reception for departing Somali Chevening scholars

MOGADISHU - The British Embassy Mogadishu hosted a farewell reception for 14 departing Somali Chevening Scholars who have been selected for a one year’s Master’s degree scholarships at UK universities.
The reception which was co-hosted by Hormuud Salaam Foundation provided an opportunity to wish the scholars well before their travel to the UK for their studies. The scholars also spoke to the Alumni about their experiences, and swapped stories and top tips for how to make the most of their time in the UK.
British Embassy Mogadishu has partnered with Hormuud Salaam Foundation, to enable more aspiring Somali leaders to study a Master’s degree in world-class universities in the UK. The partnership is supporting two outstanding individuals to gain the academic skills and networks, so that they can contribute to Somalia’s continued development.

Speaking at the reception in Mogadishu, Deputy Ambassador to Somalia, Ed Barnett said;
“I am delighted to meet with our talented new Chevening Scholars and wish them well for the next year ahead. I look forward to hearing about their adventures and successes and how they will contribute to the development of Somalia.”
CEO Hormuud Salaam Foundation, Abdullahi Nur Osman, said:
““It’s a great pleasure and honor to meet our outstanding new chevening scholars of this year, and I wish them every success for their education adventure in the year ahead. I am looking forward to welcome them back in Somalia after the completion of their study and I hope that they will contribute to the Somali’s development.”
So far, almost 100 students from Somalia have studied in the United Kingdom and many of them now occupy prominent positions in governments and other international organisations.
The scholarship offers full financial support to study for any eligible master’s degree at any UK university, whilst also gaining access to a wide range of exclusive academic, professional, and cultural experiences.
The Chevening application period for academic year 2022/2023 is currently open and will close on 2 November 2022. Applicants can apply through www.chevening.org/apply.
