Washington, DC (HOL) - Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud attended a reception on Saturday hosted by the United States of America President Joe Biden in Washington, DC. He added that new offensive operations against al Shabab in several parts of the country require international support.
President Mohamud commended the US government for assisting Somalia’s war against al-Shabab, emphasizing that the Somali people and government were fighting to flush out the terrorists from the country.
"The USA is a strategic ally and friend for Somalia's development and progress of whom we look forward to further enhancing our bilateral ties to advance regional peace," he said.
During the 77th of the UNGA session, he told the UN General Assembly on Thursday that his country was committed to the fight against global terrorism. Still, he urged international partners to abandon the policy of containment.
Mohamud credited the recent successes of Somalia's military against Al Shabaab in central Somalia to the grassroots support from locals, including militia.
