Somali President sacks Mogadishu mayor, names replacement

Wednesday September 7, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud sacked the mayor of the capital Mogadishu Omar Mohamud Mohamed, and re-appointed a close political ally, Yusuf Hussein Jimale, to replace him on Wednesday.

The President stated in a decree that he made the appointment based on the proposal of the Ministry of Interior and Federal Affairs but did not provide a reason for the dismissal of Omar Mohamud Mohamed, who former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo appointed in August 2019.

Jimale was appointed Mogadishu mayor by Hassan Shiekh Mohamud and served between November 2015 and April 5, 2017.  During the Farmajo administration, he was replaced by the deputy ambassador to the United States, Thabit Mohamed Abdi.

The President acknowledged Yusuf Jimale's knowledge and work experience, underlined, "He played an important role in reconstructing the capital Mogadishu during his term."

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud urged Yusuf Jimale to prioritize the capital's stabilization and security plan, reconciliation, strengthening cooperation between security agencies and the Banadir region's community, beauty, and the expansion of essential services.

Somali legislators re-elected Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as the country's President, following a long-overdue election on May 15, after defeating Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo.
