Somali President in Kampala for Uganda's Independence Day celebrations

Kampala (HOL) - A delegation led by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Uganda on Saturday to attend the 60th anniversary of Ugandan independence from Britain.

During his stay in Kampala, President Mohamud will hold bilateral talks with his counterpart Yoweri Museveni to discuss supporting the Somali government in obtaining regional support for ongoing offensive operations against al Shabab and strengthening security cooperation.

Somalia's armed forces, backed by local militias and international allies, wage an aggressive offensive against the al-Qaida affiliate in several parts of the country, with hundreds of militants killed in the recent operations.

He congratulated the people and government of Uganda on the 60th anniversary of the country's independence, which is currently being celebrated.

Several other heads of state have arrived in the country in response to an invitation by the government of Uganda, including Kenyan President William Ruto, who was received at Entebbe Airport by State minister for International Affairs Henry Okello-Oryem.

Burundi President Evariste Ndayishimye, President of South Sudan Salva Kiir and Zanzibar's Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi are also attending the independence celebrations in Kampala.

Uganda was one of the first five AMISOM troop-contributing countries, alongside Burundi, Djibouti, Kenya and Ethiopia, whose work started in March 2007 to degrade al-Shabaab and build the capacity of the Somali Security Forces, military and police.
