US condemns Al Shabaab attack on ATMIS base

Friday May 6, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - ‎The U.S. government strongly condemned the Al Shabaab attack on Burundian troops at an African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) base on Tuesday in the Elbaraf area of central Somalia.

"The United States stands with Burundi in the face of al-Shabab's May 3 attack on Burundian soldiers serving at the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) base in Ceel-Baraf, Somalia." Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families of the fallen, wounded, and missing. Burundi's courageous armed forces have for years held the line against transnational terrorism in Somalia. The United States remains steadfast in support of ATMIS and against the scourge of terrorism."

On Wednesday, the Burundian military said that 10 of its peacekeepers were killed at the base in  El Baraf, a small town in the Middle Shabelle region 150km (93 miles) north of the Somali capital, Mogadishu.

Al Shabaab, which claimed responsibility for the attack, said that they killed as many as 173 soldiers in the attack. However, that number could not be independently verified, and the Al-Qaeda linked group regularly inflates its death toll figures.

Burundi is one of five troop-contributing countries to the African Union operation in Somalia.
