Medium magnitude earthquake hits Sanaag region

Wednesday July 13, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - A 4.6 magnitude earthquake hit a small village which lies 170 km north of Erigabo, the capital and largest city of the Sanaag region of Somaliland, on Monday afternoon.

According to Volcano Discovery, the earthquake reached as deep as 10 km, but the moderate-magnitude quake did not cause damage to buildings in the village.

The earthquake’s estimated energy was 139-megawatt hours which is equivalent to 120 tons of TNT.

Most earthquakes in Somaliland happen in Borama town of Awdal region, where one of the mountains around the city quakes once a time, although it does not cause much damage.

Similarly, an earthquake that did not cause damage was felt in Hargeisa, Gabiley and Wajale on August 3, 2021, but people reported feeling small tremors.
