Puntland security forces clash after plane carrying humanitarian aid to Bosasso returned to capital

Monday July 11, 2022

Bossaso (HOL) - Puntland authorities have turned back a plane carrying humanitarian aid for drought-affected people that landed at the Bossaso airport on Monday, citing the delegation did not contact authorities to arrange to receive them.

Somalia's first deputy speaker of the Lower House, Sadiyo Yasin Samatar, and other federal humanitarian ministry officials were traveling on the plane.

Reports say a clash between Puntland Security Forces (PSF) and Puntland Maritime Police Force (PMPF) killed several people near the airport over the receiving of the plane carrying the aid sent by the federal government. PSF forces waiting to escort the delegation clashed with PMPF forces who were implementing the order from authorities.

Later, the traditional elders calmed the situation back to normal, and the plane carrying the aid returned to Mogadishu after security at the airport deteriorated.

The Puntland regional state authorities have accused the federal government of failing to deduct Puntand's food aid allocation. However, the federal government did not comment on the move by the regional state.

The Puntland parliament has recently asked MP Abdirahman Abdishakur, the president's drought envoy, to visit Puntland to discuss drought-related issues.
