Somalia's special envoy for drought meets with OIC Secretary-General in Saudi Arabia

    Mogadishu (HOL) - The Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Hissein Brahim Taha, met with Somali President's special envoy for Humanitarian Affairs and Drought in Jeddah on Sunday.

    During the meeting, Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame delivered a written message from the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia to the Secretary-General. 

    The Secretary-General reaffirmed the commitment of the General Secretariat to implement the Resolution issued by the Council of Foreign Ministers in Islamabad earlier this year, reiterating the organization's commitment to alleviating the suffering of the Somali people.

    He urged for intensifying assistance to those affected by the drought.

    The Somali government received 40 containers of food aid from the United Arab Emirates Saturday, amid concern over famine in Somalia. 

    UAE Ambassador to Somalia Mohamed al-Othmani, said the food supplies include more than 1,000 metric tons sent by the UAE Red Crescent, meant to help Somalia fight the drought that has devastated the country.

    Somalia has suffered through an unprecedented four consecutive failed rainy seasons.
