Kismayo (HOL) - At least five people have died of starvation after losing their livestock to drought in the Gedo region of Jubbaland state.
According to Luuq District Commissioner Ali Kadiye Ahmed, two of the dead were children. The governor added that hundreds of displaced families and people from other areas have arrived at the district headquarters seeking relief.
Ahmed called on aid agencies to intervene and warned that many lives would be in danger if the drought situation in Gedo continued.
The worst affected areas include the villages of Golweyn, Yurkud and other areas between Garbaharey and Luuq in the Gedo region.
The Somali prime minister has appointed a ministerial-level committee tasked with responding to the drought situation in Somalia.
Jubbaland is one of the worst-hit areas by the drought, with people now beginning to die of thirst and starvation after failed rains.
