Madobe, Deni to meet Farmaajo in Mogadishu

Thursday August 27, 2020

GAROWE (HOL) - The leaders of Puntland and Jubbaland have said they will be heading to Mogadishu to meet the Federal Government leadership over the electoral deadlock after they boycotted the talks in Dhusamareb.

A joint statement by the two states Thursday noted presidents Ahmed Madobe and his Puntland counterpart Abdullahi Deni will be travelling to Mogadishu.

Though it did not indicate the two leaders will be meeting President Mohamed Farmaajo, sources have indicated the two will be sitting with the president to find a way forward.

The two leaders skipped the third round of talks in Dhusamareb which resulted in a compromise electoral model to be used in the upcoming polls.

Sources privy to the developments noted the two leaders were under international pressure to joint the talks in a bid to end the stalemate.

In the Dhusamareb talks, the leaders of South West, Galmudug, HirShabelle and Banaadir Regional Administration agreed to adopt a model similar to that of 2016 with an increase of delegates electing MPs from 14,000 to over 80,000. The meeting was chaired by President Farmaajo.

Both Deni and Madobe dismissed the agreement as ‘personal opinions’ of those attending the talks.
