Jawari wins the first seat in the lower house

Professor Mohamed Osman Jawari the incumbent speaker of the Somali parliament won the first seat in the lower house in elections that began Tuesday morning in Baidoa.

Jawari garnered 45 votes while his opponent Mr. Abdirahman Sheekh Ibraahim recieved 5 votes.
The election is underway as other candidates continue to contest for seats among 23 seats set aside for South-west State of Somalia.

Four of the remaining seat should go to the women caucus as stipulated in the bylaws of the Independent Electoral Commission of Somalia.

Fowsiya Mohamed Sheikh was the first women to win a seat in Somalia's 10th Parliament.

Other MP's elected in Baidoa were Ibrahim Yerow and Dahir Abdi. All of the candidates elected from Southwest are current MP's in Somalia's parliament.

Similar elections have begun in other regional states as Jubbaland begun electing it's members to the lower house.
