Somali president recalls student days in India

Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Thursday recalled his student days in India when he had come to do his Masters in Bhopal University in the 1980s.

Referring to his student days at the Third India-Africa Forum summit (IAFS), Mohamud said: "I stand before you as a graduate of India, and not as a civil servant."

He also said India today is more important and relevant than before as provider of technical knowhow and in capacity building and knowledge to Africa.

Mohamud graduated from the Somali National University in 1981 and went on to study in India, where he obtained a master's degree from Bhopal University in 1988.

He said Africa has much to learn from India and also has much to offer India in terms of cooperation, including in fields like agriculture,

He also said that no act of piracy had taken place in the sea off Somalia thanks to international partners, including India.
