BOSSASO (HOL) - A rare tropical cyclone moved by heavy rains have blasted into the northern Somalia on Tuesday, as relief coordination were hampered by heavy floods that cut key roads linking the coastal areas.

The cyclonic storm Chapala has swept away hundreds makeshift homes and submerged boats belonged to local fishermen in Puntland, a semiautonomous region in northern Somalia.

Yousuf Mohamed, the governor of Gardufuu, one of the regions hard hit by the new cyclone said the heavy rains propelled by winds have endangered the stability of mountainous areas, triggering landslides that cut off key roads and communication lines.

Qandala ,Bareedo and Tohdin villages are among the areas affected by the cyclone.

Local authorities warned that the cyclone would also hit vast coastal areas, hard hit by previous cyclones. Local authorities started radio message broadcasts, warning residents in outlying coastal areas that the cyclone is expected to track further towards nearer coasts.

Somalia has no capacity to deal with natural disasters after more than two decades of civil war has destroyed the country’s economic infrastructure.

In 2004, one of the most powerful earthquakes in recent history that hit Southern Asia has also engulfed the northern Somalia coasts that wreaked havoc on the natural disasters borne coastal areas.
