More police officers were deployed at Moi University’s main campus yesterday after students vacated hostels over fear of terrorist attacks.

Four students are missing and are suspected to have joined al Shabaab.

Some students said they feared their former classmates might be planning attacks, so they rented hostels off campus.

Tension was high, as vice chancellor Richard Mibey yesterday strengthened security and assured students they are safe.

“We will not allow what happened at Garissa to occur here. We are not taking anything lightly,” he said.

Classes were continuing.

A police post has been established on campus and there are around-the-clock armed police patrols.

“There is no cause for alarm. We have measures to ensure students and staff are safe,” he told the Star in his office.

Mibey confirmed four students are missing, their whereabouts are unknown.

Government security is investigating.

The university admitted more than 600 students from the institution’s Garissa campus. It was attacked on April 2 by al Shabaab.
