Ethiopian soldiers kill a watchman in Moyale

Ethiopian soldiers on Sunday killed a primary school guard in Moyale subcounty.

The Ethiopian soldiers were in pursuit of suspected oromo Liberation Front rebels.

They reportedly caught up with the rebels at Sessi at 3am, where a fierce gun battle ensued.

The foreign forces stormed Moyale Full Gospel Churches of Kenya primary School which is located about two kilometres from the police station.

Pastor Joel Muguika said they abducted the watchman and killed him a few metres from the school.

He said the police found the watchman’s body in a pool of blood.

The Ethiopian soldiers have made incursions into the Kenyan territory four times in two months.

The soldiers later went to Moyale District hospital in search of any injured oromo Liberation Front rebels, whom they suspected could have sought treatment at the facility.

Medical superintendent Dr Kamau Mukui said the armed soldiers ransacked the hospital and found no rebels.

He said the presence of the armed soldiers scared away patients and staff.

Mukui said that the health facility is now deserted.

He said patients were taken away by relatives while medical personnel sought refuge in Moyale town.

Pastor Muguika told the police the soldiers said oLF rebels had crossed to Ethiopia in the night ,where they killed a soldier before retreating back to Kenya.

The Ethiopian soldiers disarmed Kenya police Reservists and confiscated two rifles and bullets.

Moyale deputy county commissioner John Cheruiyot said investigation on the incident is on-going.

He said cross-border meetings are scheduled next week to address the matter.

Cheruiyot urged the hospital staff to resume duty and said the area is safe.

Marsabit county commissioner Peter Thuku mid this week said he sent a protest note to his Ethiopian counterpart.

Ethiopian ambassador Dina Mufti, told the press on Friday it is an “illusion” that his country can attack Kenya.

He said claims that Ethiopian soldiers invaded a police station in illeret on may were false.
