JAKARTA – Leading the way as the world's most populous Muslim state, Indonesia has announced plans to construct an international Islamic study center, in a bid to spread true Islam across the world.

"We will arrange 200 hectares to build the world center for Islamic studies," Vice President Jusuf Kalla stated in Tegal, Central Java, on Monday as quoted by Antara news agency.

The vice president added that Indonesia, as a country with the largest Muslim-majority population in the world, should play a greater role in spreading Islam.

"We are grateful for it. Indonesia should have a major role in the development of Islam in the world," Kalla remarked.

The move followed calls by different governments for Indonesia to take a greater role in solving issues in the Muslim world, during a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation at the Asian-African Conference 2015 in Bandung recently.

The studies center would offer people an addition to Egypt’s Al-Azhar.

"If people want to know about Islam more deeply, they can just come to Indonesia," the Vice President observed.

He added that the international Islamic center would be built regardless of the costs required.

Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim state with Muslims making up around 85 percent of its 237-million population.

Christians, both Protestants and Catholics, make up nearly 12 percent of the country’s population.
