OIC Launches Borehole drilling project in Somalia

The Minister of Energy and Water resources of Somalia, Mr. Jama Ahmed Mohamed, launched on Thursday 5 February 2015, in the Somali capital Mogadishu, the second batch of 50 boreholes Borehole drilling project, funded by the Saudi National Campaign for Relief of Somali People. Initial package of the project is 150 boreholes which 50 boreholes was implemented and this second is due to be completed in six months. The implementation of the project is overseen by the OIC Humanitarian Coordination office in Somalia.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by government officials, , parliamentarians, representatives from the Saudi National Campaign and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Somalia, international, representatives of local and global organizations, journalists and correspondents of local and international media. At the outset of his speech, the Minister thanked and praised the efforts of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdul Aziz, in service to the Muslim Ummah in general and the people of Somalia in particular. He enumerated the many services extended by the government and people of Saudi Arabia to help Somalia and its people. He also praised the growing role played by the Saudi National Campaign for Relief of Somali People, as well as the role of Organization of Islamic Cooperation to encourage countries and coordinate efforts. the Minister mentioned that the third allocation of the next 50 boreholes will reach in Somaliland and Puntland areas.

The acting Director of the OIC Office in Somalia Mohamed Idle Sabrie addressed the ceremony, commending and enumerating the efforts of Saudi Arabia and the Saudi National Campaign in the water provision projects for the needy communities in Somalia. The OIC Office acting Director pointed out that the Saudi National Campaign was the forerunner of the international community in launching second phase of 50 boreholes for the Somali communities. The Saudi National Campaign carried out the major projects so far to provide drinking water in Somalia, and continues its leading role in helping Somalia, while leading the international community to assist Somalia in reconstruction and development through the development projects. He also thanked the Somali government for the coordination and provision of all facilities for the OIC, pointing out the OIC's readiness to cooperate with all humanitarian partners in Somalia.

Speaking on behalf of the Saudi National Campaign, the Regional Director Sa'ad Abu-Muhanna Al-Suweyd expressed his thanks to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdul-Aziz for launching the campaign to support Somalia, and for the keenness of the Saudi government and people to stand with their brothers in Somalia, out of their commitment to Islamic values. Mr. Sa'ad mentioned that the Saudi National Campaign for Relief of Somali people had signed an agreement with Al-raya international company to implement the project under the leadership of the Ministry of Energy & Water resources of Somalia. The project is supervised by the OIC office in Somalia
