NAIROBI (HOL) – More than a dozen bodies were unearthed from a mass grave in northeastern Kenya on Monday, raising concerns for more local residents who have gone missing for the past few weeks.

Residents in Mandera woke up to find the partially buried bodies, with legs sticking out from graves at Omar Jillo in Lathe village outside the town which has seen numerous deadly attacks by the Somalia-based Al-Qaeda linked militant group.

Mandera County Commissioner Fredrick Shisia said police had concluded that there could more mass graves in the area, according the Kenyan newspaper Daily Nation.

Residents in the town blamed Kenyan polices for the deaths of ‘civilians’ found in the mass graves, however, Mr Shisia has defended security personnel against allegations that they could have engaged in extrajudicial killing of suspected terrorists in Mandera.

The police have been preserved at the Mandera hospital’s mortuary, awaiting for a post-mortem.

Politicians have also accused security forces of extra-judicial killings during crackdown on terror. Others have however claimed the bodies, if any, are victims of Al Shabaab terrorists, according to Kenya’s Standard newspaper.
