Fighting resumes in Galkayo as ceasefire ends

GALKAYO (HOL) - A temporary ceasefire between warring parties in the central Somali town of Galkayo collapsed Thursday as two sides resumes fighting in the town, officials said.

At least six people were killed and eight others were injured as the two sides exchanged mortar shells and anti aircraft missiles in the town.

Frustrated by the new hostility, Somalia's president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud warned the leaders of Puntland and its neighboring Galmudug state of an accountability' for the new bloodshed which again displaced hundreds of residents from their homes.

The two leaders  Abdiweli Mohamed Ali of Puntland and Abdikarim Hussein Guled of Galmudug signed a peace agreement on Wednesday that would end hopes the violence that killed more than 20 people since last week.

The two sides accused each other of violating the ceasefire deal and initiating the fighting , as witnesses reported chaotic scenes with the two forces pummeled mortar shell on residential areas.

The clashes that involved trucks mounted with machine guns and
anti-aircraft rockets erupted after an argument involving the construction of a new road by Puntland in the town, which was halted by Galmudug forces.

Galkayo town is divided into two zones, where the northern portion
forms part of Puntland state, while its southern part is governed by
the Galmudug administration.
