Fresh charges for rampage-accused
Friday, May 18, 2012
Two fresh charges have been laid against a man charged with an armed rampage across Christchurch.
He was today charged with a threatening a man with intent to frighten him, and intentionally smashing a glass door at Redwood Primary School.
Christchurch District Court Judge Gary MacAskill remanded the new charges to June 22, the later date that has now been set for the 27-year-old unemployed Somali man's post-committal conference.
He continues to have interim name suppression.
Before post-committal conferences take place, a judge considers the written files provided by the prosecution and decides whether the case should be sent for trial, and a date for a pre-trial conference is then set.
The man faces charges arising from a armed incident across the city on March 15.
He is charged with unlawful possession of an offensive weapon, a knife, in Redwood Primary School and Hoon Hay Road, kidnapping and attempting to murder a council worker, and injuring a woman with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The man was shot twice by police to end the incident and his first court appearance after his arrest was held in a ward at Christchurch Hospital where he was recovering.
