Eastern Cape police spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha said on Wednesday the men had approached the two Somali men under the pretence of wanting to buy bread.
“While the Somalian was preparing to sell them bread, the suspects demanded money,” he said.
“They produced knives and stabbed the two. The 28-year-old Somalian was severely stabbed on his upper body and both were rushed to Butterworth Hospital where the 28-year-old died.”
The motive for the attack was believed to be purely criminal and not xenophobic, Manatha said.

The four men were expected to appear in the Butterworth Magistrate's Court on January 27 on charges of murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
