A group of 28 Somali illegal immigrants were brought into Birzebbuga on Sunday night, after they were spotted some 17 miles off Delimara by a local sailing yacht. The Andrew Valletta spotted the migrants in a black fiberglass boat at around 1700CEST heading for Marsaxlokk.
Malta has been targeted as a destination by Somalis since the situation in that country deteriorated; they now make up some three quarters of migrant arrivals, according to sources.
The migrants were wearing life jackets and their condition was described as generally good. The group is made up of 19 males and nine females, two of whom are pregnant.
The Maritime Squadron's Swift-class patrolboat P-24 was dispatched to the scene and the migrants were brought into Wied il-Buni.
