Somalia marks Somali Teachers’ Day on November 21, a moment dedicated to celebrating the women and men whose commitment strengthens the foundation of our nation. This year’s celebration comes at a transformative time for Somalia’s education sector, where teachers stand at the heart of national reform.
In that spirit, this article revisits one of the most significant ongoing reforms: the expansion of Somalia’s public teaching workforce, a cornerstone of the country’s education revival.
A Historic Investment in Teachers
Over the past two years Somalia has taken bold steps to address the chronic shortage of qualified teachers. As part of its long-term vision to improve access and learning outcomes, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education has already recruited and trained 6,000 new public school teachers across the country.
This milestone marks the fulfilment of a major phase in the government’s commitment to strengthen the education workforce and improve classroom quality.
Building on this achievement, the Minister of Education, Culture and Higher Education, H.E. Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir, has reaffirmed the government’s promise to recruit an additional 3,000 teachers, advancing Somalia toward its target of bringing more than 10,000 qualified educators into the public school system.
This expansion goes hand in hand with the construction of 300 new public schools, ensuring that both teachers and learners have the facilities needed for a strong and equitable education system.
Raising Standards Through Transparent Recruitment
The teacher recruitment process is designed to uphold fairness, competence and accountability. Applicants undergo a rigorous set of requirements, including:
• A recognized bachelor’s degree
• Passing certification examinations
• Meeting health, ethical and professional standards
This ensures that the teachers entering Somalia’s classrooms are capable, motivated and committed to delivering quality education.
A Transformational Moment for Somalia’s Education Sector
Somalia’s ongoing teacher recruitment is more than a staffing effort. It is a national strategy to rebuild the education system, reduce disparities and ensure long-term stability. With 6,000 teachers already deployed and trained, and 3,000 more on the way, the government is signalling its resolve to confront decades of educational disruption.
This initiative highlights the belief that education is central to Somalia’s development, and teachers are the most important drivers of that change.
A Fitting Tribute on Somali Teachers’ Day
As Somalia honours its teachers today, the progress achieved in recruiting, training and deploying thousands of educators stands as a powerful testament to the value placed on the teaching profession.
This Teachers’ Day, we celebrate both the long-serving educators who have carried the nation through difficult decades and the thousands of newly trained teachers joining the mission to uplift Somali children.
To all Somali teachers, thank you. Your dedication builds the nation’s future.
