Jowhar (HOL) — The Jowhar District Police Command has
confirmed that security forces apprehended two militia members involved in an
attack on Hirshabelle regional security forces in the Middle Shabelle region on
Thursday.
The attack took place in the village of Mareereey, located
on the outskirts of Jowhar city.
Jowhar District Police Commander Abdifatah Arwaah Aden said
the assault was carried out by armed militias suspected of having links to
al-Shabaab.
“A group of militias ambushed a vehicle belonging to the
Jowhar District Police Station on the road between Mahaday and Jowhar districts
while our officers were on duty. The group is suspected of being linked to
terrorism,” Commander Abdifatah told reporters.
Independent sources reported that at least three people were
killed on both sides, with several others injured during the exchange.
Tensions remain high in areas between Mahaday and Jowhar,
stemming from ongoing disputes over agricultural land in Mareereey and nearby
villages. Local elders who spoke to the media blamed elements within the
Hirshabelle administration for fueling the conflict.
