Thursday October 16, 2025

Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has extended his condolences to the government and people of Kenya following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in India on Wednesday.

In his message, President Mohamud described Odinga as a “towering statesman whose legacy of democracy, justice, and public service will endure.”

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to President William Ruto and the people of Kenya on the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga — a towering statesman whose legacy of democracy, justice, and public service will endure. Somalia stands in solidarity with Kenya in this moment of grief,” President Mohamud said.

The Somali leader noted that Odinga was a transformative figure in African politics who championed democratic governance and social justice throughout his life. He added that Odinga’s influence transcended borders, inspiring generations across the region to pursue freedom, equality, and unity.

According to family sources, Odinga’s body is expected to arrive in Nairobi on Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m. The veteran opposition leader and ODM party chief reportedly died of cardiac arrest during a morning walk in India.

Condolence messages have continued to pour in from leaders across the political divide, international partners, and citizens, all praising Odinga’s lifelong dedication to Kenya’s democratic ideals and national unity.
