Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has
congratulated Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan on her re-election,
praising her leadership and reaffirming Somalia’s commitment to strengthening
bilateral and regional cooperation.
“I extend warm congratulations to H.E. Samia Suluhu on her
re-election as President of the United Republic of Tanzania,” President Mohamud
said in a statement on Saturday.
“Her victory reflects the trust and confidence of the
Tanzanian people. Somalia looks forward to deepening our brotherly ties and
advancing regional peace and prosperity,” he added.
Tanzania’s electoral commission announced that President
Samia Suluhu Hassan secured 97.66 percent of the vote in Wednesday’s election,
which was marred by controversy after leading opposition candidates were barred
from contesting.
Election day saw heavy security across major cities, and
according to witnesses, protests erupted in several areas where demonstrators
tore down campaign posters, set fire to government buildings, and clashed with
police. Security forces reportedly used tear gas and fired shots to disperse
crowds.
Internet monitoring group NetBlocks said social media
platforms and mobile internet access were restricted nationwide during and
after the vote.
President Samia, who first took office in 2021 following the
death of her predecessor John Magufuli, becomes Tanzania’s first woman to win
re-election, consolidating her leadership in the East African nation.
