Garowe (HOL) — Puntland’s security forces have warned that
anyone carrying weapons outside the official security apparatus will face legal
action, amid growing political and military tension in the region.
Puntland Police Commander Gen. Mumin Abdi Shire said on
Saturday authorities will take firm measures against any armed individuals
operating beyond the control of state institutions. He emphasized that the
regional government remains committed to defending Puntland’s stability and
governance.
“If anyone opposes the system or the government, we are
obliged to defend it,” Gen. Mumin said. “A thousand men lost their lives in the
Cal Miskaat mountains defending this administration and its governance.”
The commander acknowledged the existence of political
pressure and armed groups within Puntland but said recently trained forces in
Carmo are now fully prepared to take over urban security operations.
He added that the police will not target individuals for
political reasons but will act decisively against those who threaten public
safety or undermine state authority.
Gen. Mumin’s statement comes as tensions rise between
Puntland and the Federal Government of Somalia. The Puntland administration
recently cut salaries and logistical support for troops registered with the
federal army, accusing some of aligning with Mogadishu. Those same soldiers
reportedly received direct salary payments from the Federal Government in
recent days.
The warning underscores Puntland’s determination to assert
control amid competing loyalties among armed units in northern Somalia.
