Somali minister urges end to clan clashes in Hiiraan’s Matabaan district

Wednesday May 7, 2025

Beledweyne (HOL) — Somali Minister of Petroleum and Minerals Dahir Shire Mohamed has called for an immediate cessation of inter-clan fighting that erupted Tuesday in the Miirdacay area, located in the Matabaan district of the Hiiraan region.

The clashes reportedly involve militia groups from two clans based in the neighboring Galgaduud and Hiiraan regions. Local sources said the violence began early Tuesday morning and has already resulted in the deaths of at least two pastoralists from the Hiiraan region.

“Based on the importance of peace for society, I am sending a call for peace to the brotherly clans involved in the conflict,” Minister Dahir said in a statement. “I appeal to traditional elders, scholars, youth, and intellectuals to work for reconciliation and prevent further bloodshed. In war, a son dies—not a son is born.”

The Hiiraan regional administration also issued a press release urging an unconditional end to the violence. Officials emphasized the need for unity against the common threat of extremist groups like Al-Shabaab.

“There is no clan war in heaven, and there is no progress in clan war,” the statement read. “The people of Hiiraan must abandon destructive cultural practices and pursue genuine reconciliation.”

The administration said Governor Ali Jeyte Osman has ordered local security forces to intervene and de-escalate the conflict, while continuing efforts to establish a ceasefire between the warring factions.

The recent clashes underscore the ongoing challenges of inter-clan tensions in central Somalia, even as the federal and regional governments continue major security operations against Al-Shabaab in nearby districts.
