Somaliland, SSC-Khatumo blame each other for heavy fighting in Buqdharkayn

Saturday March 8, 2025

Mogadishu (HOL) – Somaliland forces and the SSC-Khatumo administration accused each other of starting Friday's heavy fighting in the Buqdharkayn district.

The Somaliland Ministry of Interior stated that the fighting started when SSC-Khatumo forces attacked civilians returning from a water pool in Buqdharkayn. According to the Ministry, the residents fiercely defended themselves against what they described as an ambush by armed groups, suffering heavy losses in the process.

"We regret that Firdhiye sees the holy month of Ramadan as a political victory for bloodshed and to create conflict among brothers. Somaliland is ready for peaceful coexistence in the region," the Ministry said in a statement.

In contrast, the SSC-Khatumo administration accused Somaliland forces of launching an assault on their military bases. A statement from the SSC-Khatumo Ministry of Security described the attack as an act of aggression, aimed at key military installations. SSC-Khatumo further criticized Somaliland as a separatist group, claiming its actions were destabilizing the region.

"The attack targeted key SSC Khaatumo military bases, resulting in casualties and significant damage. This aggression, coming at a time when there were hopes for de-escalation and peaceful dialogue, exposes the true nature of Somaliland's intentions to sow chaos, disrupt stability, and continue its campaign against the people of SSC Khaatumio who have long fought for their rights, sovereignty, and dignity," the statement read.

SSC-Khatumo has called on the international community, human rights organizations, and peace-loving nations to condemn the attack and hold Somaliland accountable.

"The world must recognize that it is Somaliland's relentless pursuit of violence that is threatening the peace and security of our region, not the people of SSC-Khatumo, who continue to strive for stability and coexistence," the statement continued.

SSC-Khatumo called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urged for peaceful negotiations to end the conflict, reaffirming its commitment to finding a peaceful and lasting solution.

The Buqdharkayn district, which had previously seen violent clashes between Somaliland and SSC-Khatumo forces, had been peaceful in recent times, but the Friday's fighting comes amid plans by the Somaliland government to integrate local militia forces into its official military ranks.
