Armed fighters from opposing factions mobilize on pickup trucks as clashes intensify between Somaliland forces and SSC Khaatumo fighters in the contested town of Buqdharkayn.

Mogadishu (HOL) — Heavy clashes broke out early Friday between Somaliland forces and SSC Khaatumo fighters in the contested town of Buqdharkayn, located in Sool region, marking another escalation in the ongoing territorial conflict.

The number of casualties remains unclear, but both sides have shared footage of the gunfire exchange on social media. Initial reports indicate the clashes began between SSC Khaatumo forces and SSB clan militias before Somaliland's military later intervened, escalating the violence.

The SSC Khaatumo accused Somaliland's military of launching an unprovoked attack on their positions at around 10 a.m., stating that their forces were compelled to retaliate.

"Somaliland forces attacked our positions, but our brave troops repelled their aggression," read a statement from the SSC Khaatumo Ministry of Security. "We urge the people of SSC-Khaatumo to stand firm in defending their land and to fully support their armed forces."

The statement also accused Somaliland of deliberately destabilizing the region and undermining SSC Khaatumo's governance.

Somaliland authorities have not directly addressed the latest accusations, but government officials have previously stated that their security operations aim to restore stability and integrate local militias into Somaliland's administration.

A high-ranking Somaliland delegation, led by Vice President Abdirahman Abdilahi Ismail, is currently in the eastern regions, where it has reiterated a commitment to resolving disputes through dialogue.

"We believe peace can only be achieved through negotiations, not conflict," Ismail told reporters. "We are ready to sit down with all parties to find a lasting solution."

In contrast, SSC Khaatumo leader Abdiqadir Aw Ali Firdhiye has taken a hardline stance, urging his forces to sustain their resistance against Somaliland's military presence.

Speaking in Bo'ame, Firdhiye called on his troops and supporters to remain committed to the fight, stating:

"We must strengthen our military campaign and push back against Somaliland's occupation. This is not just a battle but a fight for our people's rights and sovereignty."

He also stressed the strategic importance of Ceerigaabo, asserting that SSC Khaatumo intends to expand its authority over key areas in the disputed regions.

The latest clashes underscore the precarious security situation in northern Somalia, where territorial disputes between Somaliland and SSC-Khaatumo have repeatedly derailed peace efforts. SSC-Khaatumo, formed in February 2023 by Dhulbahante clan elders, rejects Somaliland's claim over Sool, Sanaag, and Cayn (SSC) and instead seeks autonomy within Somalia. The movement gained traction following mass protests and escalating tensions in Las Anod, culminating in the expulsion of Somaliland forces from the town and a broader push for self-governance.

In October 2023, the Federal Government of Somalia formally recognized SSC-Khaatumo, further inflaming political tensions in the region. Clashes in Buqdharkayn and Yeyle in November 2023 saw Somaliland forces and SSC-aligned militias trade accusations over which side initiated the fighting.

The contested areas have also become a flashpoint for clan-based conflict, with the Habr Je'lo and Dhulbahante clans frequently engaged in skirmishes. Despite mediation efforts by traditional elders and community leaders, the absence of a sustainable political settlement has perpetuated cycles of violence.
