Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali police arrested several suspected Al-Shabaab members on Thursday after an explosion at a house in Mogadishu’s Dayniile district revealed an apparent bomb-making operation.

According to police, the blast occurred as the men were assembling explosive devices inside a residence in the Barwaaqo neighbourhood. The materials reportedly detonated prematurely, injuring the suspects and alerting nearby residents.

Locals said they heard two successive explosions before security forces arrived and cordoned off the area. Authorities apprehended the wounded suspects and launched an investigation into the property, which neighbours said had long been viewed with suspicion.

Despite community concerns, the house had not been previously searched. The Dayniile district administration has not yet commented publicly on the incident.

The explosion comes amid a renewed push by Somali authorities to dismantle Al-Shabaab networks operating in urban areas. While security efforts have increased in the capital in recent months, the militant group continues to pose a threat, frequently using improvised explosive devices in attacks targeting civilians and government sites.

Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaida affiliate, has fought to overthrow Somalia’s internationally backed government for over a decade. The group often relies on asymmetric tactics such as car bombings and suicide attacks.

The Somali government, supported by international partners, has stepped up counterterror operations in Mogadishu as part of a national strategy to stabilize the capital and reclaim territory from militant control.
