President Mohamud meets political party leaders ahead of June National Consultation Forum

Wednesday June 4, 2025

Mogadishu (HOL) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud convened a high-level meeting on Wednesday with leaders of registered political parties at the Presidential Palace in Mogadishu as part of preparations for the National Consultation Forum scheduled for June 15, 2025.

The meeting focused on evaluating progress and challenges in Somalia’s ongoing electoral reform process. President Hassan Sheikh emphasized the importance of completing the country’s transition to universal suffrage, highlighting the efforts made over the past two decades to establish a system that enables direct elections.

“The government is fully committed to finalizing a democratic election system based on the principle of one-person, one-vote,” the President said. “National consultations and political stakeholder engagement are key pillars to ensure an open and credible electoral process.”

Political party leaders welcomed the President’s remarks, applauding the government’s efforts to advance the electoral process. They also recommended launching nationwide awareness campaigns to educate the public and encourage broad participation in the upcoming direct elections.

The engagement with political parties follows a separate civil society consultation held on Tuesday at the Presidential Palace, where President Hassan emphasized the crucial role of civil society in shaping Somalia’s state-building and democratization journey.

According to Villa Somalia, both meetings are part of a broader series of inclusive consultations aimed at achieving national consensus on key governance priorities.

The upcoming National Consultation Forum will focus on five main areas: security and the fight against terrorism, democratization, electoral processes, completion of the constitution, national unity, and reconciliation.
