Bosaso (HOL) – Puntland's elite Dervish forces have killed more than 35 ISIS militants, including several foreign fighters, during a major military operation carried out Tuesday in the rural area between Miraale and Balade in the Bari region, officials said.
Commanders leading the offensive presented to the media the bodies of numerous ISIS fighters, many of whom were foreign nationals, killed as they attempted to flee through mountainous hideouts. The troops also destroyed a cache of weapons and military equipment used by the group.
The Balade River, near Bosaso, is now believed to be a key regrouping point for remaining ISIS elements, who are seeking refuge from continued airstrikes and ground offensives.
This latest assault follows last week's significant military gain when Puntland forces captured the ISIS command center in Miraale Valley, a strategic stronghold the group had controlled for years.
Puntland authorities have intensified operations against ISIS militants, who have used the rugged terrain of Bari as a base for training, planning, and launching attacks.
The offensive underscores Puntland's renewed counterterrorism momentum, with officials vowing to eliminate ISIS remnants and restore stability to the region.
The Puntland government has urged continued cooperation with federal and international partners, especially in the fight against extremist groups that threaten the security of Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa region.
