Mogadishu (HOL) – Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Moallim Fiqi concluded a high-level working group meeting on Wednesday, bringing together approximately 60 officials and experts from Federal Government institutions, the United Nations Transition Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS), and various UN agencies operating in Somalia.
The meeting focused on developing a comprehensive roadmap for the phased transfer of responsibilities from UNTMIS to the Federal Government of Somalia and relevant UN agencies, marking the initial phase of the transition.
Minister Fiqi commended the UN mission for supporting Somalia’s state-building and stabilization efforts while highlighting the progress made across key sectors.
The minister urged stakeholders to ensure the transition process is pragmatic, well-structured, and efficiently executed. "After completing the two-year transition period, UN agencies operating in Somalia will align their programs and initiatives with Somalia’s National Transformation Plan (NTP), fostering a cohesive and strategic approach to the country’s development agenda," the minister said.
Ambassador James Swan, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia, and Minister Fiqi praised the dedication and professionalism of the officials involved in drafting the transition plan, which is expected to be presented to the United Nations Security Council in March 2025.
