Somali Electoral Commission meets Hirshabelle President to advance one-person, one-vote elections

Wednesday January 29, 2025

Jowhar (HOL) – A delegation from Somalia's National Electoral Commission and Boundaries met with Hirshabelle President Ali Abdullahi Hussein Guudlawe in Jowhar on Tuesday, two days after their visit to Baidoa, as part of efforts to accelerate preparations for the country's transition to a one-person, one-vote electoral system.

The commission emphasized the importance of inclusive elections in Hirshabelle, stating, "One-person, one-vote elections are a priority for the people of Hirshabelle, and it is necessary for us to lead this process, God willing."

During their stay, electoral officials will engage with community representatives and assess designated election sites across Hirshabelle to ensure readiness for the upcoming polls.

The commission also announced that Local Council Elections will take place in June, covering regions such as Gedo and Khaatumo, which aligns with the federal government's strategy to strengthen local governance and democratic institutions.

The commission has also committed to increasing the number of polling stations nationwide from 300 — originally identified by the previous commission—to 800. Officials are scheduled to begin marking these additional polling sites next week, a move seen as critical in ensuring broader access to the electoral process.

The Somali government has been working toward implementing direct elections, aiming to shift from the traditional clan-based electoral system to a more inclusive and democratic framework.
