Mogadishu (HOL) — Two boys were injured in separate hyena attacks in the Dhagahyo Addo area of Ethiopia's Somali Regional State, highlighting the dangers posed by wildlife to rural communities in the region.

In the first attack, 16-year-old Bashir Mohamed Ismail Harir was bitten while sleeping near a camel enclosure. Mohamed Ismail Harir's father recounted the terrifying ordeal: "The hyena bit his mouth and grabbed his hand. He is now receiving treatment at a hospital in Burco."

Hours later, 14-year-old Roble Mohamed Hussein was attacked while herding goats. The hyena seized his arm, causing serious injuries. His younger sister, who witnessed the attack, acted quickly, striking the animal with a stick and driving it away. Roble is receiving care at a hospital in Gaashaamo.

Residents, determined to prevent further attacks, tracked the hyena to a wooded area later that day and killed it, according to community members. The swift response underscores the growing concern over human-wildlife conflicts in this part of Ethiopia.

Hyena attacks are not uncommon in the Somali Region, where rural communities often live in close proximity to wildlife. Such incidents highlight the pressing need for strategies to mitigate these conflicts, including better awareness and preventive measures.

The injured boys are expected to recover, but their ordeal has left families and residents shaken, with many calling for increased attention to safety and wildlife management in the area.
