UAE donates 700 tons of food aid to drought-stricken Somalia

Wednesday January 8, 2025

Mogadishu (HOL) — The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has donated 700 tons of food aid to Somalia to assist the ongoing drought-affected communities in the country.

UAE Ambassador to Somalia Ahmed Juma Al-Rumaithi handed over the relief supplies to Somali Disaster Management Agency (SODMA) Commissioner Mohamud Moallin Abdulle during a ceremony in Mogadishu on Tuesday.

According to Abdulle, 300 tons of the food were dispatched to Kismayo, with another 200 tons sent to Bosaso for drought-affected residents. The remaining 200 tons are designated for regions facing severe conditions, though specific locations were not disclosed.

Somalia has been grappling with worsening drought conditions after the Deyr rainy season's failure, typically between September and November. In late 2024, the federal government declared an official drought phase and called for urgent humanitarian aid to address the escalating crisis.
