Puntland thanks U.S. and UAE for airstrikes targeting ISIS in Bari region

Sunday February 2, 2025

Garowe (HOL) – Puntland regional state has expressed its gratitude to the United States and the United Arab Emirates for their support in the ongoing military offensive against ISIS militants in the Al-Miskat mountains of the Bari region.

In a statement released on Saturday, Puntland acknowledged the airstrikes conducted by the U.S. military and the UAE’s involvement, noting their significance in neutralizing key ISIS figures in the region.

“We greatly appreciate the contributions of the United States and the United Arab Emirates, whose involvement in airstrikes targeting Daesh elements within the Al-Miskat mountains has been invaluable,” the statement read.

Puntland also thanked Ethiopia and Kenya for their support during the initial phase of the operation.

The U.S. military has conducted airstrikes against Islamic State operatives in Somalia’s Bari region on Saturday, the first attacks in the African nation during President Donald Trump’s second term.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the strikes by U.S. Africa Command were directed by Trump and coordinated with Somalia’s government. Several ISIS operatives were killed in the airstrike.

Trump, in a post on social media, said a senior IS planner and recruits were targeted in the operation.

“The strikes destroyed the caves they live in, and killed many terrorists without, in any way, harming civilians. Our Military has targeted this ISIS Attack Planner for years, but Biden and his cronies wouldn’t act quickly enough to get the job done. I did!” Trump said. “The message to ISIS and all others who would attack Americans is that “WE WILL FIND YOU, AND WE WILL KILL YOU!”

However, Trump did not specify the identity of the targeted ISIS planner or confirm if that individual had been killed. White House officials did not provide additional details.
