Mogadishu (HOL) — A cargo truck with failed brakes slammed into a home and adjacent restaurant in Mogadishu’s Howlwadaag district early Tuesday, killing a 60-year-old woman and injuring four others, authorities and witnesses said.
The victim, identified as Maryan Mahmoud Ulusow, died instantly when the truck crashed through her house shortly after midnight. Emergency crews took the injured to a nearby hospital. Officials did not immediately release details on their conditions.
The force of the crash caused significant structural damage to both buildings and trapped victims under the debris. Local responders worked through the night to clear the site and assist survivors.
Tuesday’s crash is the second major truck-related accident in Mogadishu within a week. On Oct. 28, a similar brake failure at Jubba Junction killed one person and injured two others when a freight truck overturned during rush hour.
Traffic officials say collisions involving heavy cargo vehicles have risen across the capital in recent weeks. They attribute the increase to poor vehicle maintenance, overloaded trucks and drivers who lack adequate training or certification.
